Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Monticello, Wacissa: Prepare for Hazardous Conditions
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Monticello and Wacissa, effective immediately, urging residents to prepare for hazardous winds, major flooding, and potential tornadoes by October 9th.
Residents of Monticello and Wacissa are urged to finalize preparations immediately as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Inland Jefferson County. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL issued the watch at 5:22 PM EDT on October 8th, effective until 1:30 AM UTC on October 9th. This alert signals the potential for significant hazards, including tropical storm force winds, major flooding, and several tornadoes.
Authorities advise acting now to secure properties and prepare for limited wind damage. Peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph are expected, with potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to mobile homes, awnings, and sheds is possible, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated, especially on elevated roadways.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with additional rainfall of 4-8 inches, and locally higher amounts, expected. Major rainfall flooding is likely, potentially causing widespread evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow their banks, and floodwaters could impact numerous structures, rendering some uninhabitable. Driving conditions will become dangerous, with many road closures possible.
The NWS also indicates a potential for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or boats should relocate to safer shelter before hazardous weather arrives. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be prepared to shelter quickly if one is issued. There is little to no threat of storm surge flooding.
Monitor local weather conditions and forecasts from NWS Tallahassee (weather.gov/tallahassee), and follow guidance from the Florida Division of Emergency Management (floridadisaster.org) and Jefferson County Emergency Management (jeffersoncountyfl.gov/p/county-departments/emergency-management).
