WALKER COUNTY, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Walker County, effective immediately. This warning, issued October 9 at 10:17 AM CDT, indicates that tropical storm-force winds are expected within the area, specifically Jasper, within the next 36 hours. The warning expires October 9 at 6:30 PM UTC.

Residents in Jasper should complete all preparations now before hazardous winds begin. Peak wind forecasts are 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Potential impacts include damage to unanchored structures, broken tree limbs, and some snapped or uprooted trees. Scattered power and communication outages are possible, and some roads may become impassable due to debris.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected and locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate flooding, potentially prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and floodwaters could enter some structures. Driving conditions will become hazardous, and some road and bridge closures are anticipated. Heed all flood watches and warnings immediately.

Tornadoes are not expected at this time; however, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. For more information and preparedness resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
