A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Walker County, effective immediately, with hazardous winds up to 50 mph and significant flooding expected; residents should secure property and prepare for potential evacuations, according to the NWS.
WALKER COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Walker County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 6:57 PM CDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, reports that residents in the Jasper area should prepare for hazardous wind and significant flooding rain. This warning is set to expire on October 10 at 3:00 AM UTC.
The NWS forecasts peak wind gusts up to 50 mph. All remaining efforts to protect property, such as securing outdoor items, should be completed now. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous. Potential impacts include damage to porches, awnings, and sheds, downed tree limbs, and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are expected on bridges and elevated roadways.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding could lead to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow their banks, and floodwaters could enter structures. Residents in flood-prone areas should consider protective actions and heed any flood watches and warnings. Driving conditions will become hazardous due to expanded areas of rapid inundation in low-lying spots and underpasses. Tornadoes are not expected at this time.
