SC House Pushes Tax Credits to Boost School Choice Options
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina House passed key legislation this session to expand school choice through targeted tax credits, building on the state's existing programs like the Educational Credit for Exceptional Needs Children (ECENC). House Bill 306 proposes refundable income tax credits for parents whose children attend qualifying private, parochial or home schools: $2,000 for tax year 2025, rising to $4,000 in 2026, $6,000 in 2027, and $8,500 thereafter, capped at actual tuition costs. For each student switching from public schools, the state would reduce State Aid to Classrooms by $2,000 starting in the 2025-2026 school year, a provision sparking debate over public education funding.
