Islamorada residents and organizations looking to host a fireworks display must submit an application to the Islamorada Village of Islands – Fire Rescue Department at least 30 days prior to the event date, according to village guidelines. This requirement aligns with Florida State Law.

The Fire Rescue Department, located at 86800 Overseas Highway, 1st Floor, Islamorada, Florida 33036, manages the permit application process. The application requires detailed information about the responsible organization, including its business name, contact person, address, and phone number. If a fireworks event staging company is involved, their information must also be provided. Both the sponsoring and the staging company must be named on the required insurance documents.

Key details for the proposed fireworks display must be included on the application, such as the date and time of the display, its approximate duration, and the distance from the nearest building. Applicants must also specify the name of the area fire department and the exact location of the property and the display itself.

A critical component of the application is a site map. This diagram must clearly show the fireworks launch location, the position of all buildings, highways, the audience restraint line, and any nearby obstructions like trees, telephone lines, or other overhead structures. For displays involving floating vessels or platforms, compliance with NFPA 1123, Chapter 6, is mandatory.

Evidence of insurance is also a prerequisite. The original Certificate of Insurance, specific to the event, must be approved by the Village of Islands before a permit is issued. Copies are not accepted for this approval. The insurance policy must name Islamorada Village of Islands as a co-insured party and list both the sponsoring and responsible organizations as insured parties. The liability insurance must meet a minimum limit of $1,000,000 per occurrence for all claims.

The application form also outlines specific regulations for fireworks displays. These include confirming if the display is in a public park owned by the Village, which would require additional authorization. Applicants must detail the number, type, and size of fireworks to be discharged. Site selection, transportation, and ground discharge must conform to NFPA 1123 and NFPA 1124 standards. Specific setback requirements are in place: fireworks must be at least 100 feet from any building and 50 feet from overhead electric or telephone lines, trees, or other obstructions. Displays cannot be fired within a half-mile of a hospital, nursing home, or other sensitive occupancies as determined by the Fire Department.

Spectators must be kept at least 200 feet from the discharge point, behind designated lines or barriers. Only authorized personnel are permitted within these lines during the event setup and execution. All unfired fireworks must be safely disposed of or removed after the display concludes, and debris must be properly managed.

For more information or to obtain an application, interested parties can contact the Islamorada Fire Rescue Department at 305-664-6490 or via email at [email protected].
