Ishpeming Approves 2027-2031 Master Plan: Housing & Development
The Ishpeming Planning Commission unanimously approved the city's 2027-2031 Master Plan on June 1 after a 42-day public review period.
The plan overhauled housing policy to address a shortage of diverse housing types, including townhomes, smaller homes, and rental options. The commission based the housing chapter on recent market data and a Target Market Analysis that identified affordability and home rehabilitation as priorities.
The commission refined future land use categories to match existing development patterns and prioritize infill development in areas with established water, sewer, and transportation infrastructure. It updated zoning standards for setbacks, parking requirements, and housing flexibility, and introduced potential overlay districts to align the Master Plan with the city's Zoning Ordinance.
The plan encourages efficient use of existing public investments rather than expansion into underserved areas.
Residents can review the full Master Plan or contact Andrew Duerfeldt, Planning and Zoning Director, at (906) 485-1091, extension 206, or [email protected].
