Roger Dale Cowgill, Sr., Cumberland Native and Navy Veteran, Dies at 77

Ridgeley, WV-Roger Dale Cowgill, Sr., 77, of Ridgeley, died June 6, 2026, at home.Born January 3, 1949, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Roy Sylvester Cowgill and Beneda Esther (Keplinger) Cowgill.Roger served in the US Navy from 1968 – 1973.He had worked at various places, including VanMeter Construction and UMPC-Western Maryland.Roger was a life member of Gold Star Post #6452, V.F.W.; William E. Shuck, Jr. Memorial Post 136, American Legion; Cumberland Outdoor Club, and the Good Fellowship Club.Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Retha May (Miller) Cowgill; one son, Roger D. Cowgill, Jr. and wife Jennifer; two grandchildren, Zackery and Whitney; dear cousin, Linda Knipple and husband Dick; sister-in-law, Carolyn Clites; and special friend, Cookie.A committal service will be conducted in the chapel at MSVC-Rock Gap, on Thursday, June 18th at 2 PM.Military honors will be accorded by Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., is handling arrangements.

Carl Kenneth Conley, 77, Cumberland Resident and Dominion Power Retiree, Dies

Cumberland, MD-Carl Kenneth Conley, 77, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on April 24, 2026.Born December 1, 1948, in Garrett, MD, he was the son of the late Harold Kenneth Conley and Hilda Eliza (Shepard) Conley.He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 38 years, Etta Lee (Beveridge) Conley.Carl worked at the Dominion Power Company as a heavy equipment operator. He started at 18 years of age and was there until he retired.He attended Cumberland Seventh Day Adventist Church and belonged to Cresaptown Eagles, Aerie #2883.In his free time, Carl enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates play ball. He loved the outdoors, including coon hunting and mushroom hunting.Among the survivors are his stepson, Charles Thrasher; cousin David Scott Shank, his wife Jayne, their sons Eric and Jaden, and their daughter Miranda. He was also blessed with many dear friends that helped with his care.Carl had a big heart and was very giving to his family and friends. He will be dearly missed.Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, on Monday, May 4, 2026, from noon until 1 PM. The funeral service will follow at 1 PM, with Pastor Jim Buchanan, officiating.Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Alan C. Cuppett, Ridgeley Hair Salon Owner, Dies After Cancer Battle

Alan C. Cuppett, lifelong resident and business owner in Ridgeley, died April 19, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.Alan was a graduate of Ridgeley High School and was an apprenticed cosmetologist at age 18. He enjoyed taking care of clients at his salon, “Mr. Alan’s” on Knobley Street. Alan was considered a “hair artist” offering services for men, women and children so they could be “Fabulous!” Make-up, skin care and hair products, and fashion accessories were also available. Patrons enjoyed the outdoor oasis on the second floor of the salon.He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers.Survivors include his sister-in-law, Wanda Zollner, nieces and nephews.At his request, Alan donated his body to the WVU Human Gift Registry – a gift which promotes medical education and research.Friends will be received at Calvary United Methodist Church, 28 Knobley Street, Ridgeley, on Saturday, May 30th. from 2-3 PM.  A memorial service will follow at 3 PM, with Pastor Brad Reinhart officiating.Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 354, Ridgeley, WV 26753.
