Three firefighters die, two injured while battling wildfires on Colorado-Utah border

Three firefighters died and two others were injured while battling wildfires burning along the Colorado-Utah border, authorities said.

The Cottonwood Fire, the largest blaze in the area, burned through rugged terrain in southwest Utah. The fire grew to more than 144 square miles by Saturday as it advanced through canyons and mountainsides.

Fire officials did not immediately release the names of the deceased firefighters or provide additional details about how they died. The two injured firefighters' conditions were not disclosed.

Multiple fires have burned across the region, with crews working in difficult topography that complicates both fire suppression and firefighter safety. Southwest Utah's canyon systems and steep mountainous areas present significant challenges for ground crews attempting to contain the blazes.

The Cottonwood Fire's rapid expansion over the weekend underscored the volatile conditions firefighters face during the active wildfire season in the Four Corners region.
