Copper theft sparked massive explosion at Atlanta apartment complex

May 2, 2026

A massive gas explosion that tore through the Northside Plaza Apartments on Markham Street just after 10 p.m. Tuesday was triggered by someone attempting to steal copper from a vacant unit, Atlanta Police and Integral Property Management confirmed. The blast shredded part of Building C, less than half a mile from Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and sent debris across the courtyard. One person suffered severe burns and was hospitalized in stable condition; authorities have not released the individual's identity or determined whether they were trespassing.

According to investigators, the sequence of events began hours before the explosion when nearby businesses reported a strong smell of gas to 911—first around noon and again around 2 p.m. The property management company said it received a report around 1:45 p.m. of a gas odor in the area. Despite these early warnings, the gas continued to accumulate in the vacant unit until someone broke in to steal copper and used an open flame, igniting the accumulated gas.

The explosion displaced between 40 and 19 residents—sources vary on the exact count—and forced multiple families from their homes. Integral Property Management acknowledged in a statement that copper theft has been a persistent problem at the complex, with residents reporting trespassers regularly entering vacant apartments. The company said it is fully cooperating with investigators as Atlanta Fire Rescue and other agencies continue their active investigation into the blast.

The incident underscores the dangers posed by metal theft targeting apartment complexes. Scrappers targeting copper wiring create not only property damage but also public safety hazards when their actions interfere with gas lines or electrical systems. Officials have not indicated whether they expect to file charges against the injured person once they recover.
