Albert Lea Solar Power & Water Management Expansion

Albert Lea is expanding its environmental initiatives beyond Earth Day observances. The city's wastewater treatment plant draws 13% of its electricity from solar panels, while solar arrays on the city arena roof supply 20% of that facility's power. City officials plan to install solar systems on four additional buildings.
Rain gardens throughout Albert Lea reduce flooding by capturing and filtering runoff before it enters local lakes. The city also encourages residents to adopt storm sewer drains through the Shell Rock River Watershed District, which maintains the drains and keeps debris out. Participants receive a free compost permit at the Albert Lea Transfer Station.
