Study Links High Sodium, Low Potassium Intake to Increased Mortality Risk
People who consume diets with elevated levels of sodium and diminished amounts of potassium face a greater risk of death, according to research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The study, conducted by scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University, and Harvard University, revealed a correlation between this dietary imbalance and a 50 percent increase in the risk of death from any cause.
Researchers also found that individuals with high sodium and low potassium intake experienced approximately twice the risk of death from heart attacks. The study did not establish a cause-and-effect relationship, but highlighted a significant association between the two.
The team analyzed data from a sample population, focusing on dietary habits and health outcomes. The study's findings suggest a need for further research into the impact of sodium and potassium on overall health. Public health officials have long recommended a balanced diet, including ample potassium and limited sodium, for maintaining cardiovascular health.
