Port of Virginia Hits Record 1.2M TEUs in Q1 2026 Boom
NORFOLK, Va. — The Port of Virginia processed a record 1.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first quarter of 2026, surpassing prior benchmarks amid booming exports from Hampton Roads manufacturing sectors. The volume, initially reported by WTVR CBS 6, reflects a surge in loaded exports as regional producers capitalize on strong global demand. Interim CEO and Executive Director Sarah McCoy spotlighted the achievement in her April 23 State of the Port address in Virginia Beach, calling the facility "America's Most Modern Gateway" engineered for speed, certainty and scale in international commerce.
Hampton Roads manufacturers, including those in automotive parts, machinery and consumer goods, drove the export gains, channeling shipments through the port's deep-water terminals at Norfolk International and Virginia International Gateways. The Q1 total marks a significant leap, building on historical highs like the 1.3 million TEUs across April-July 2022, the busiest four-month stretch on record. McCoy emphasized infrastructure upgrades, including expanded rail and on-dock rail facilities, enabling the port to handle megaships up to 18,000 TEUs efficiently.
This performance positions Virginia ahead of peers amid stabilized North American container volumes in Q1 2026, with steady imports from Asia and export upticks signaling supply chain recovery. Local stakeholders, from trucking firms in Chesapeake to warehouse operators in Portsmouth, report heightened activity, bolstering thousands of jobs across the 1,500-square-mile port district. Officials project sustained growth, with statistics available via [email protected] for detailed metrics.
