Omaha Track Meet Draws Record 15K+ Crowd as Lincoln East Girls Reign
OMAHA, Neb. — Over 15,000 spectators flooded Burke Stadium over the weekend for the Nebraska School Activities Association Class A state track and field championships, setting a new attendance benchmark for the event. The massive turnout, initially reported by KHGI Nebraska TV, reflected booming interest in high school sports across the state, surpassing prior records like the 7,764 seen at last year's cross-country meet in Kearney.
Lincoln East's girls team claimed the team title, topping the standings in a meet loaded with competitive depth. Team scores showed fierce battles, with Grand Island placing 11th at 20 points, Omaha Marian 13th at 18, Millard North 14th at 17, and a tie for 15th between North Platte and Omaha Westside at 14 points each. The championships highlighted Nebraska's track talent pipeline, from Lincoln powerhouses to rural standouts.
Standout individual efforts lit up the track, including Hunter Holly's fourth-place shot put toss of 158 feet 1 inch as a Syracuse junior, and Cooper Stokebrand's third-place mark of 158 feet 5 inches for Tri County seniors. In field events, St. Mary's sophomore Ben Barlo hit 20 feet 5 inches, while Amherst's Gavin Davis and Dundy County-Stratton's Noah Zultenko posted strong jumps. Girls' throws saw Battle Creek senior Sophie Humphrey earn fourth at 36 feet 9¼ inches, a two-time medalist, with sophomore Maisie Stolasa of Clarkson-Leigh taking third at 37 feet ¼ inch.
Races delivered drama too, as Will Casey of Arapahoe blazed to victory in the D-400 with a 48.93 clocking. In Class C boys 400, West Holt's Brody Gallian edged Lincoln Lutheran-Conrad's runner for a 1-2 Huskies sweep. These performances, set against Nebraska's storied track tradition documented in all-time charts and hall of fame honors, cemented the meet's place as a state highlight.
