Sandwich Earns Green Community Status, Unlocks Energy Grants

Sandwich Wins Green Community Designation, Opens Door to Energy Grants

The Town of Sandwich earned Green Community status from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, making it eligible for state grants to fund energy-efficiency projects.

To qualify, Sandwich met five state criteria: adopting an energy use baseline and reduction plan, updating zoning to allow renewable energy facilities, establishing expedited permitting for such facilities, requiring new municipal buildings to meet energy standards, and committing to purchase fuel-efficient vehicles when replacing municipal fleet vehicles.

The designation gives Sandwich access to competitive funding for renewable energy installations, building upgrades, and alternative transportation initiatives. The program aims to help municipalities reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while cutting municipal costs.

Residents can visit the Department of Energy Resources website for details on the Green Communities program.
