Pentagon Says U.S. Military Remains Ready for Iran Combat if Negotiations Fail
U.S. defense officials stated the American military stands prepared to conduct combat operations against Iran if current negotiations break down without a settlement.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters the U.S. military retains the ability to resume military action in the Gulf region. Pentagon officials said the armed forces have maintained operational readiness for potential renewed hostilities.
David Hegseth, the Defense Secretary, told reporters a blockade of Iran-bound shipments remains in effect. He said the enforcement operation continues as diplomacy proceeds.
These statements arrived as representatives from the U.S. and Iran have engaged in discussions aimed at reaching an agreement, though no accord has emerged. The negotiations have extended over weeks without producing a deal both sides have accepted.
U.S. officials characterized the military preparations as precautionary positioning while diplomatic channels remain open. The Pentagon said it has allocated resources to maintain combat capability in the region alongside ongoing talks.
Iranian officials have not released statements responding to the U.S. military statements, according to available reports.
The U.S. military presence in the Gulf includes naval vessels and other assets stationed to project American military capability. Defense officials said these deployments allow the U.S. to respond to developments in the region.
Hegseth indicated the U.S. maintains both diplomatic engagement and military preparation simultaneously. He told reporters the defense posture would continue as long as negotiations persisted.
The situation reflects a pattern in which the U.S. has combined diplomatic outreach with military deployments in the region. Officials said the dual approach reflects policy strategy during an active negotiating period.
