Beach Hazards: Strong Currents and Rip Current Risk Today

A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Coastal Horry and Georgetown Counties today until 8:00 PM EDT due to strong longshore currents and a moderate risk of rip currents; exercise caution and check with lifeguards before entering the water.

Coastal residents and visitors in Horry and Georgetown Counties should exercise caution when in or near the ocean today, Thursday, September 24th, due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC. The statement is effective immediately and remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT.

The NWS has identified a strong north to south longshore current, which can sweep swimmers and surfers into hazardous areas such as rip currents, piers, and jetties. This current may also make it difficult for individuals to return to shore. Additionally, there is a moderate risk of rip currents.

Affected areas include Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties. The NWS advises checking with lifeguards for possible hazards before entering the ocean. Swimmers are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and the potential for strong currents.
