Beach Hazard: Strong Currents & Rip Current Risk Along Local Coasts

Residents and visitors planning to enter the ocean should exercise caution due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC. The statement is effective from 6 AM EDT Wednesday, September 23, until Wednesday evening, September 23.

A strong north-to-south longshore current is expected, posing a risk to swimmers. Additionally, a Moderate Risk of rip currents is anticipated. These conditions can sweep swimmers and surfers into dangerous areas such as rip currents, piers, and jetties, and may make it difficult to return to shore.

The affected areas include Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties in North Carolina, and Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties in South Carolina.

The NWS advises that caution should be used when in or near the water. Before entering the ocean, check with lifeguards for information on possible hazards.
