Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along Local Coasts Today
A Rip Current Statement is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT today for Coastal Pender, New Hanover, Brunswick, Horry, and Georgetown counties, warning of dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents.
Beachgoers are advised to exercise extreme caution today, October 11, due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service Wilmington NC. Dangerous rip currents are expected, along with a strong south to north longshore current, affecting east and southeast-facing beaches.
This statement is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT tonight for Coastal Pender, Coastal New Hanover, and Coastal Brunswick Counties in North Carolina, as well as Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties in South Carolina.
Rip currents can quickly pull even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Swimmers should remain near a lifeguard if entering the water. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and signal for help by calling or waving.
