FIU Students Learn to Understand Middle East Conflict Deeper

Florida International University students heard calls Thursday to look beyond social media headlines for accurate information on the Middle East conflict. An on-campus panel discussion, "Voices of the Middle East," hosted at the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs, aimed to educate students on how news coverage shapes perceptions of the region.

Global Jewish Studies and Hillel at FIU partnered with Eighteen 13 to organize the event. The panel featured Noa Tishby, former Israeli envoy for combating antisemitism; Jonathan Elkhoury, a minority rights advocate; and Fatema Al Harbi, Gulf Affairs Director at Sharaka. The discussion highlighted the difficulties of understanding complex geopolitical issues through social media.

"Don't stop at the headline," urged Jonathan Elkhoury. "Seek the explanation, and rely only on credible sources." Elkhoury cautioned that the Middle East's intricate geopolitical landscape cannot be fully grasped through brief online posts or sensationalized headlines. He encouraged attendees to seek comprehensive reporting instead of short online summaries.

Tishby and Al Harbi echoed Elkhoury's advice, advocating for reviewing coverage from multiple credible, independent newsrooms before forming conclusions about the conflict. The panel concluded with a question-and-answer session.
