The Florida International University Student Government Association Senate confirmed two new senators and two secretaries during its Sept. 28 meeting. The Senate also discussed the potential establishment of a Sigma Pi fraternity chapter and reviewed upcoming campus events.

A public forum, moved to the start of the agenda at Senator Joshua Espinoza's request, addressed student concerns regarding the rejection of Senator Manuel Fernandez’s Anti-ICE resolution, which opposed cooperation between FIU and federal immigration authorities.

During the forum, international business major Abraham Faskha called for campus officers to be a trusted presence, not a source of fear. He emphasized the importance of trust between students and campus security, stating, "Students should feel that they can report a crime safely and ask for help without worrying that doing so could create immigration consequences for themselves or their families."

Following the forum, the Senate considered the proposed Sigma Pi chapter. Two national Sigma Pi representatives addressed the Senate, expressing excitement for a planned Fall 2026 semester activation.

The Senate then confirmed appointments. Freshman Gabriel Moreno, a member of Phi Kappa Alpha, was voted Secretary of Veterans Affairs with a 15-7 vote. Moreno stated his goal is to increase participation in the Annual Veterans’ Breakfast.

Sara Gallardo was confirmed as Deputy Attorney General in a 20-2 vote. Gallardo, a criminal justice and psychology major, cited her academic interests and previous leadership experience.

Mariangel Flores and Isabella Zambrano were considered for a CARTA Senate position. Zambrano, a senior public relations, advertising, and applied communication major, outlined plans to increase collaboration among CARTA students and organizations. Zambrano was approved in a 22-2 vote.

Sarah Currea, a senior international relations student, was confirmed as the online senator. She noted SGA funding helped her participate in the FIU in D.C. program.
