Homestead Police arrested Yonelfy Diaz, 21, on six counts of arson after a fire damaged four vehicles and a residence in the 1000 block of Northwest 9th Street. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, leading to significant damage to two vehicles, a GMC Sierra and a Chevy Tahoe, and the back of a nearby home.
Authorities identified Diaz as the brother of the victim's ex-wife. The victim, whose identity has not been released, reported a prior altercation with his ex-wife's two brothers two days before the arson. During that incident, one of the brothers allegedly threw a wrench at the vehicle the victim was driving while dropping off his children.
Surveillance footage from the scene captured multiple explosions and two individuals fleeing the area. One of the males appeared to have his back on fire as he ran. Investigators identified the getaway vehicle, which was registered to the suspects' other sister, leading them to Diaz.
Detectives later interviewed Diaz and observed blisters on his hands, burned eyelashes, redness above his right eyelash, and a large burn injury on his arm. Diaz declined to explain the source of his injuries. He was booked into jail and appeared before a judge on Wednesday, who ordered him held without bond.
