A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Holmes County, including Bonifay and Ponce De Leon, indicating possible tropical storm-force winds and extensive flooding within 48 hours. Residents should prepare for dangerous winds and potential major flooding now.
HOLMES COUNTY, FL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Holmes County, effective today, October 7, 2026, at 2:09 PM EDT. This watch means tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours for areas including Bonifay and Ponce De Leon.
Residents should plan for dangerous winds of equivalent strong tropical storm force, with peak gusts potentially reaching 35 mph, and a potential for sustained winds of 58 to 73 mph. Preparations to protect life and property should begin immediately. Act now to complete all preparations before hazardous winds arrive.
Extensive flooding from heavy rainfall is also anticipated, with 4-8 inches expected and locally higher amounts possible. Major rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Strongly consider protective actions, especially if you are in a flood-vulnerable area. Heed all flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life.
Potential impacts include damage to roofing, siding, and outbuildings, snapped or uprooted trees, impassable roads due to debris, and scattered power and communications outages. Floodwaters could make roads impassable and enter structures. Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though gusty winds are possible with showers and thunderstorms.
