The series draws inspiration from the Law&Crime and Audible Original podcast "Karen." It will investigate the events surrounding the discovery of a Boston police officer found dead in the snow during a blizzard.
According to the official synopsis, attention focused on his girlfriend, Karen Read. Her defense team claims she is innocent and a victim of a conspiracy protecting the real assailants. The story has divided communities.
Banks, who grew up in Massachusetts, said she witnessed how the case divided families, friends, and towns. She stated the project will explore why certain stories gain traction and what happens when public trust in institutions erodes.
Banks praised showrunner Justin Noble, describing his script as one that respects the complexity of the events and public reaction. Noble characterized Read's story as having more unexpected turns than fiction, noting its profound takeaways about justice system flaws, the mistreatment of women, and the need to remember victims.
