Strong Storms Approach: Seek Shelter in Seminole, Hughes, Pontotoc, Coal Counties

Residents in Seminole, Hughes, Pontotoc, and Coal counties should seek shelter indoors immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) Norman has issued a Special Weather Statement due to strong thunderstorms detected by Doppler radar at 2:56 PM CDT, moving east at 20 mph.

These storms pose a hazard of wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects, with minor damage to outdoor objects possible.

The NWS indicates the storms are along a line extending from near Holdenville to 3 miles southeast of Ada. Areas expected to be impacted include Ada, Holdenville, Allen, Stonewall, Francis, Calvin, Stuart, Lamar, Sasakwa, Gerty, Horntown, Atwood, and Spaulding.

This Special Weather Statement is effective until 3:45 PM CDT today, September 20. If you are outdoors in these areas, please consider seeking shelter inside a building for your safety.
