A Special Weather Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX for Northern and Central Lea County, effective until 9:45 PM MDT tonight, October 12, 2026. Residents in the path of this storm, particularly in Buckeye and Lovington, should consider seeking shelter inside a building if outdoors.

At 9:10 PM MDT, a strong thunderstorm was detected by Doppler radar 11 miles east of Maljamar, or 17 miles southwest of Lovington. This storm is moving northeast at 35 mph.

The primary hazards associated with this storm are wind gusts up to 40 mph and penny-sized hail. These conditions could result in gusty winds knocking down tree limbs and blowing around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also possible.

The National Weather Service urges those outdoors in Northern and Central Lea County to seek shelter indoors until the statement expires.
