Hurricane Watch for Big Island as Tropical Storm Nolo Approaches

Residents on the Big Island are urged to finalize preparations as a Hurricane Watch is in effect due to Tropical Storm Nolo. The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement today, September 23, at 5:01 PM HST, indicating Nolo continues to strengthen and move northward.

Nolo is currently located approximately 350 miles south of Hilo, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, moving west-northwest at 6 mph. Damaging tropical storm force winds could reach the Big Island as early as Friday morning, with dangerous hurricane force winds possible by Friday night. Excessive rainfall of over 20 inches, with localized amounts up to 35 inches, is possible on the Big Island, leading to potentially catastrophic flash flooding, landslides, and mudslides. Maui County could see over 10 inches, with localized amounts of 20 inches.

Life-threatening wind impacts are expected across the Big Island, with considerable roof damage and widespread power outages possible. Hazardous storm surge and localized inundation are also anticipated along immediate shorelines. Isolated tornadoes and large waterspouts are possible, particularly over and near the Big Island.
