Transitional Housing Success: Teen Earns GED, Gets Apartment

Staff Writer
May 16, 2026
From Transitional Housing to Independent Life

A 17-year-old resident of Canal House Redmond Transitional Living Program earned his GED and received keys to his first apartment on the same day last summer. Months later, he continues to maintain the space while exploring job options and regularly checking in with program staff.

He has become an informal mentor to current residents. On New Year's Eve, he attended the program's life skills group and shared advice on paying bills, filing taxes, and setting realistic goals. A new Spanish-speaking resident connected with him immediately, and the two have stayed in touch.

His visits reinforce a key lesson for younger participants: the program's structure supports long-term success. He now explains its value to new arrivals, drawing on his own experience navigating independence.
