Maricopa County Wins 78 National Achievement Awards for Service

Maricopa County is once again being recognized as a national leader in county government service and efficiency. For the third year in a row, the National Association of Counties has honored Maricopa County with more than 70 of its National Achievement Awards. This year's haul: 78, across a wide range of services including public health, elections, and criminal justice.

Maricopa County is once again being recognized as a national leader in county government service and efficiency. For the third year in a row, the National Association of Counties has honored Maricopa County with more than 70 of its National Achievement Awards. This year's haul: 78, across a wide range of services including public health, elections, and criminal justice. "Maricopa County employees are skilled, innovative, and most of all, they care deeply about our residents," said Board of Supervisors Chair Kate Brophy McGee, District 3. "I'm grateful to NACo for recognizing that so many of our programs make a measurable, positive impact on the community." NACo Awards are designed to recognize county government programs that provide needed services, improve access to services, enhance citizen participation, and which show measurable results such as cost savings, improved outcomes, and enhanced productivity. NACo gave awards to 20 separate Maricopa County departments, elected offices, and judicial branch agencies this year, proving that great work is being done across many different lines of business. The most recognized departments in 2026 are Public Health with 24 awards and Human Services with 17 awards. "These awards reflect the hard work and commitment of our employees, who show up every day focused on serving Maricopa County residents," said County Manager Jen Pokorski. "They take pride in finding better ways to deliver services and make the most of taxpayer dollars. I'm incredibly proud to work alongside such a dedicated team as we continue looking for ways to improve each year." Board of Hearing Review Mission The Board of Hearing Review hears appeals of orders issued by the Chief Engineer for floodplain violations including development that is not in compliance with an active floodplain use permit or has damaged or interfered with facilities not otherwise authorized. The board of hearing review shall consist of one member from each board of directors' district or the board of directors may authorize the citizens' flood control advisory board or the board of review to designate a like number of its members to serve as the board of hearing review. Duties & Powers A.R.S. §48-3615.01 If the chief engineer finds that a person has engaged or is engaging in development in the floodplain without a floodplain use permit, has engaged or is engaging in any development that is not in compliance with an active floodplain use permit or has damaged or interfered with facilities that are authorized pursuant to this chapter without written authorization of the board of directors, the chief engineer shall issue a notice of violation to the owner, occupant or manager of the real property on which the development is located or to the person who has damaged or interfered with the facilities. The notice of violation shall identify the violations observed and order the violator to cease and desist any ongoing activity that is not in compliance with the regulations adopted pursuant to this chapter or cease and desist any damage or interference that is not authorized by the board. The notice of violation shall include the date and time by which the person must mail or deliver a response to the notice of violation. On written request of any party who is subject to the decision and order of the chief engineer or hearing officer pursuant to this section, the board of hearing review may review any decision and order of the chief engineer or hearing officer. The written request for review shall be delivered to the clerk of the board of directors within fifteen days after the date of the final decision and order. The written request shall identify specifically the section or sections of the chief engineer's or hearing officer's final order that is requested to be reviewed by the board of hearing review. The board of hearing review shall set a time and date to hear the matter requested for review. The hearing shall be conducted based on the information presented to the chief engineer or hearing officer in issuing the final decision and order or, in an appeal from a determination of a violation by a hearing officer, the record before the hearing officer. The information presented to the chief engineer or hearing officer in issuing the final decision and order shall be made available to all parties on request. Based on the record before the board of hearing review, the board may deny, approve or modify the order of the chief engineer or the order of the hearing officer. The board shall issue a written order of its decision, including findings of fact and conclusions of law, and shall submit its final written order on the matter to the chief engineer within thirty days after completion of the hearing. Maricopa County Awarded $1.5 Million Grant to Expand Services for Incarcerated Veterans

Phoenix, Ariz. (Sept. 8, 2026) – Maricopa County has been awarded a three-year, $1.5 million grant by the U.S. Department of Labor's Incarcerated Veterans Transition Program to expand workforce development services for incarcerated veterans, creating a more streamlined pathway to employment and successful community reintegration. "Every veteran in our community deserves a meaningful opportunity to build a stable and successful future," said Board of Supervisors Chair Kate Brophy McGee, District 3. "Veterans are highly valued members of the workforce, and adding such a meaningful reentry program ensures quality employment opportunities will be available upon release. This is an investment in the economic opportunity, independence, and the long-term success of veterans." The funding, totaling approximately $500,000 per year for three years, will serve veterans in local correctional and long-term care institutions by providing individualized career planning, skills assessments, and employment support, including training, apprenticeships, work-based learning and opportunities with fair-chance employers in in-demand industries. The program will also build on the County's existing Smart Justice initiatives by expanding services specifically for veterans who have recently been released from incarceration. Smart Justice helps justice-involved individuals prepare for, obtain, and succeed in meaningful employment through career coaching, workforce training, job resources, and paid work opportunities. The grant will fund a new full-time Program Coordinator – Veteran Reintegration position to oversee program implementation and strengthen partnerships with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Bound by Valor Unit, Phoenix Veteran's Affairs, the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services, and other local community organizations that are involved in bringing the program to life. Until the position is filled, veterans can access services through the County's existing Workforce Development and Smart Justice programs. By creating a dedicated veteran reintegration pipeline, Maricopa County aims to reduce barriers to employment, strengthen connections to housing and community resources, and help veterans transition from incarceration to stable employment and long-term self-sufficiency. MCACC Holds Aiming for Another Shot at Love Adoption Event

"Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) is giving shelter dogs another chance to find the loving families they deserve with its upcoming “Aiming for Another Shot at Love” Adoption Event, taking place from Monday, September 14, through Sunday, September 20. The weeklong adoption special is sponsored by a generous donor, Ames McGarey, who is once again partnering with MCACC to help make a difference in the lives of dogs waiting for their forever homes. During the event, adoption fees will be half off for all dogs at both MCACC’s East and West shelters, as well as its Everyday Adoption Center. The reduced fees are designed to encourage members of the community to consider opening their homes to a shelter dog and give more animals the opportunity to leave the shelter and begin the next chapter of their lives with a loving family. “We’re excited to end the busy summer season with an adoption special like Aiming for Another Shot at Love,” said Kim Powell, Communications Supervisor for MCACC. “We’re incredibly thankful to Ames McGarey for sponsoring this event. It’s through amazing community members like her that many of our animals can find positive outcomes.” This is the second year in a row that McGarey has partnered with MCACC to help dogs have a shot at finding a forever home. "My hope is that we can have another successful event to put wonderful dogs into loving and caring homes,” said McGarey. “All dogs deserve a second chance after they’ve entered our shelter system, and there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing that this has been achieved. Huge accolades to the volunteers who literally dedicate their lives to helping these dogs. It’s a passion like no other, and it’s a pivotal component to our shelter system." MCACC and McGarey hope this year’s event will once again lead to more successful adoptions and help as many dogs as possible find loving and permanent homes.
