Tourism Development | Okaloosa County

Tourism Development | Okaloosa County Mission: The mission of the Tourism Development Department (TDD) is to make time spent here, whether visiting living or working, more valuable to all. Fitting, because many residents today began as a tourist! Okaloosa County is a destination rich in family-friendly experiences. Whether visiting the winding rivers flowing through north county tree lines, parks and recreational points of interest or spending a few days at the white sandy beaches reflecting upon the Gulf of Mexico shoreline, the TDD promises to get kids outside... on the water to give their adventurous side room to grow! Why is tourism important for Okaloosa county? Tourism impacts the local economy in many ways; by creating jobs, contributing to sales tax, infrastructure surtax, contributing to small business revenue, and in our countywide tourist development district, they also fund tourism-related amenities, activities, environmental improvements, protection, restoration and preservation. Local residents play an important part in making tourists feel welcome through advocacy and hospitality. What actions make you more comfortable when traveling? An authentic local recommendation - Tips on the best time of day to travel - Maybe just a smile. Organization: Led by Tourism Director Jennifer Adams, a team of experienced and qualified staff performs the Tourist Development Council (TDC) mission. The TDC serves as an advisory council to the Board of County Commissioners. The Tourist Development Department is required to promote the area and meet the following objectives below: Promote tourism sales and increase overall visitation through marketing and advertising of our beautiful area to strategic travel markets, generating a maximum return on investment for the local economy. Visit destinfwb.com to learn about our destination Operation of Visitor Welcome + Adventure Centers, Convention Center, Fairgrounds + Events Center, Baker Recreation + Equestrian Center and the Film Commission Beach safety and funding of the Beach Safety Life Saving Program (funding of beach lifeguards) Special event funding Research and evaluation of the success of all programs and the local economy Protection and improvements to the natural environment through funding of the artificial reef program, public beach access parks, beach trash removal, beach restoration improvements, Sea Turtle Conservation and much more. Ensure compliance with state statutes and local ordinances as required The TDD is solely funded by a 6% lodging tax paid by visitors staying overnight in short-term rentals in Okaloosa County. Short-term overnight rentals include hotels, motels, resort motels, apartments, apartment motels, rooming houses, mobile home parks, recreational vehicle parks, condominiums, condominium hotels, timeshare resorts, residential dwellings or campgrounds for a term of 6 months or less. The Florida Statute 125.0104 permits the Board of County Commissioners of Okaloosa County to levy Tourist Development Tax (TDT), and Chapter 20 Article II, Sections 71-78 of the Okaloosa County Ordinances created the Tourist Development Council, established the initial tax rate collection, and identified the special taxing districts with Okaloosa.

Water Conservation Tips

Water Conservation Tips Indoors Never pour water down the drain. There is probably another use for it, such as watering indoor plants or a garden. Make sure your home is leak-free. Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter reading changes, your home may have a leak. Fix faucets. Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers. Retrofit older faucets by installing aerators, which will slow the flow of water, ultimately saving water and money on your bill. Fix toilets. Check toilets for leaks by adding food coloring to the tank. A leak is prevalent if color appears in the bowl within 30 minutes. After testing, flush immediately to avoid stains. Replace or adjust toilet handles that stick, letting water run constantly. Installing a displacement device or a low-volume toilet can reduce the amount of water needed for each flush. Install low-flow showerheads. New low-flow showerhead models provide a great amount of pressure but use less water. Also, try taking shorter showers. Run only when full. Operate the dishwasher and washing machines only when fully loaded. Stop buying bottled water. Bottled water costs more and leaves a trail of empty plastic bottles. Invest in a $20 pitcher water filter to save money and the environment. Do not waste water. Don't let water run while brushing your teeth, washing your face, or shaving. Outdoors Don't overwater lawns. Lawns only need watering every five to seven days in the summer and every 10 to 14 days in the winter. Water early. Water lawns during the early morning hours when temperatures and wind speed are the lowest to help reduce evaporation and waste. Don't water pavement. Position sprinklers so that lawns and landscaping are watered and not paved surfaces. Check the irrigation system. Inspect sprinkler systems and timing devices regularly to ensure they are operating properly. Keep grass long. Raise the blade on your lawnmower to at least 3 inches or to its highest level. A higher cut encourages grass roots to grow deeper. Don't over-fertilize. Applying fertilizer increases the need for water. Apply fertilizers that contain slow-release, water-insoluble forms of nitrogen. Use mulch. Mulch helps to retain the moisture in the soil and to control weeds that compete with landscape plants for water. Plant Native. Use native and drought-tolerant vegetation. Once established, these plant materials do not need water frequently and usually will survive a dry period without watering. Blow or sweep. Do not wash down driveways or sidewalks; use a broom or blower instead.
