Hialeah Public Works: Water & Sewer for 230k+ Residents

The City of Hialeah's Department of Public Works provides water and wastewater services to more than 230,000 residents across approximately 23 square miles. The department also supplies water to parts of unincorporated Miami-Dade County and maintains emergency interconnections with Hialeah Gardens and Miami-Dade County.

Hialeah purchases most of its drinking water from Miami-Dade County. The city's Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant produces up to 7.5 million gallons daily, primarily serving northwestern areas. Residents in the southeastern part of the city receive water from the John E. Preston Water Treatment Plant, operated by Miami-Dade County.

The city draws water mainly from the Biscayne Aquifer, a South Florida freshwater source. Hialeah's plant and the John E. Preston facility pump water from this aquifer for treatment. The jointly owned Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant uses water from the deeper Floridan Aquifer. Hialeah residents consume an average of 24 million gallons of water daily.

The city invests in its water and wastewater infrastructure through an ongoing Capital Improvement Program. These investments aim to meet regulatory standards and maintain reliable service. Water conservation remains a priority, with continuous efforts to protect resources and encourage responsible use.

The wastewater system includes 101 lift station service areas, approximately 338 miles of gravity sewer lines and laterals, and over 6,900 manholes. This infrastructure collects and manages wastewater throughout Hialeah.
