Hialeah's Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) educators now have access to a comprehensive guide of student center activities designed to boost early literacy. The new Teacher Resource Guide provides a wealth of materials for young learners, focusing on foundational skills critical for reading success.
The guide includes over 20 resources specifically for enhancing alphabet knowledge, covering both letter names and letter-sound correspondence. Activities like "Letter Arc," "Letter Tap Stack," and "Sound Flash" are available, with many also offered in Spanish, such as "Arco de Letras" and "Mantel de Sonido de Letras." These tools help ensure VPK students build a strong understanding of the alphabet.
Beyond alphabet knowledge, the guide addresses phonological awareness through activities focusing on rhyme, syllables, compound words, and onset and rime. "Rhyme Book," "Syllable Hopscotch," and "Compound Word Flip Book" are among the resources available. The guide also supports emergent writing with 12 distinct activities, including "Writing My Name" and "Writing My Grocery List," with adapted versions for ESE students and Spanish translations like "Escribiendo Mi Nombre."
A wide array of language and vocabulary resources are also part of the guide, available in both English and Spanish. These include interactive activities such as "Describe It," "Choose and Chat," "Guess Who?," and "Category Blast Off!" The Florida Department of Education and the Florida Center for Reading Research jointly copyrighted these materials. Educators can print them for non-profit use without modification, but commercial use is strictly prohibited. Questions regarding the use of these materials can be directed to the Florida Center for Reading Research at [email protected].
Hialeah VPK teachers can integrate these new resources into their classrooms immediately, providing engaging and effective tools to support their students' literacy development. The availability of these materials ensures local educators have the support they need to prepare children for future academic success.
