Hialeah residents balancing jobs, families, and financial pressures can find earning a college degree challenging. Florida National University (FNU) aims to close this gap with flexible educational pathways tailored for working adults, career changers, parents, and first-generation students.
FNU designs its programs around adult learners' realities, offering classes at various times and accessible financial aid. This contrasts with institutions focused on traditional 18-year-old students.
Nationally, nearly 37 million Americans under 65 hold some college credit but no degree, often due to work or family commitments. A 2025 survey found 60% would return to complete their education if a clear path existed, citing cost and scheduling as primary barriers.
Adult learners, who represented 24% of undergraduates in fall 2023, often pursue education for job security and to manage rising living costs. They require institutions that understand their needs.
FNU offers morning, afternoon, and evening classes at its Hialeah and Miami campuses, alongside a distance learning program. This flexibility allows students to integrate education with their responsibilities.
"The reason I chose FNU is because this is the only university that made it possible for me to work and study at the same time," said former student Rachel Bibilonia.
Lisuan Morales completed her Associate of Science in Radiology at FNU while working two jobs, finishing the program in under two years. Her entire class passed their board exams on the first attempt.
FNU maintains a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio, providing adult learners direct access to instructors. The smaller class size helps students stay focused and receive continuous academic monitoring and advising.
FNU graduate Jose Alvares recalled, "I remember that the dean and everyone knew that I was struggling, so they worked hard to keep me focused so that I could finish and succeed." This personal attention supports adult learners who may feel uncertain about their academic abilities after time away from school.
FNU's distance learning program offers the same credential value as on-campus attendance and provides access to federal financial aid, scholarships, and tuition incentives. Online students utilize library access, virtual tutoring, the Writing Studio, and academic advising, making education accessible for those with demanding work or home lives.
The university's Academic Advising Center assists new, transfer, and returning students in building their academic plans.
