The film 'Phenomena,' directed by Dario Argento, saw multiple theatrical releases in 1985, each with varying running times and content.
In Italy, the film premiered on January 31, 1985, with a 116-minute runtime, often referred to as the "integral cut." A shorter version, running 110 minutes, was prepared for international distribution, featuring minor cuts to scenes.
The Italian box office performance for 'Phenomena' reached 2.7 billion lire, surpassing the earnings of films such as 'Gremlins,' 'Dune,' and 'The Terminator' in that market.
In the United States, New Line Cinema distributed the film under the alternative title 'Creepers,' releasing it on August 30, 1985. This U.S. version was significantly truncated to 83 minutes, with scenes removed and others reordered. The 'Creepers' cut also introduced music segues between scenes where none previously existed and omitted the song 'Locomotive' by Motörhead. Author Troy Howarth noted 'Creepers' as the last Argento film to receive a substantial theatrical release in the United States.
The United Kingdom also received a shortened cut of the film as 'Creepers' in April 1986.
Further home media releases included 'Creepers' on VHS and Betamax in 1986 by Media Home Entertainment, retaining the 110-minute runtime. By March 29, 1986, 'Creepers' entered Billboard's Top Videocassettes Rentals chart, reaching number 29 by April 5 of that year.
