Herkimer Schools $37M Budget: 1.98% Tax Increase
The Herkimer Central School District released a $37 million budget for 2026-27 that increases spending 4.99% while holding the tax levy increase to 1.98%, below the state cap of 6.35%.
Superintendent Kathleen Carney attributed the larger-than-typical spending growth to increased BOCES costs, including capital project payments, and health insurance expenses rising 8.5% nationwide.
The district has stayed under the state levy limit in 15 of 16 years since the cap took effect in 2012-13.
The budget preserves existing programs and positions. It also includes a proposition to establish a new capital reserve fund.
Residents vote on the budget from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at the Middle-High School Library Media Center. The ballot also includes the election of three Board of Education members and votes on the library budget and trustee positions.
The district holds a budget hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the Middle-High School Library Media Center. Detailed budget information is available on the district's Budget and Finance page.
