FlyDubai Pilot Subdues Attacker on Flight to Tel Aviv
Captain Smit Machchhar acted to restrain an individual who attacked him during a FlyDubai flight. The incident occurred on an Israel-bound flight.
Captain Smit Machchhar of FlyDubai flight FZ-1627 restrained an individual who attacked him in the cockpit during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on November 15. The incident occurred approximately 20 minutes before the aircraft's scheduled landing at Ben Gurion Airport.
According to accounts, a passenger rushed the cockpit and attacked Captain Machchhar with a sharp object. Captain Machchhar engaged the individual, preventing further escalation of the assault.
Passengers on board the Boeing 737-800 assisted flight crew members in subduing the individual. The crew then secured the individual to a seat in the back of the aircraft. Israeli security personnel arrested the individual upon the flight's arrival in Tel Aviv.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement regarding the incident. He stated that Captain Machchhar prevented a potential security catastrophe. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the attacker or stated a motive.
