Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Franklin County: Flooding and Tornadoes Possible
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Franklin County, with a high potential for significant flooding and tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.
FRANKLIN COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Peachtree City, GA, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Franklin County, effective immediately as of October 8 at 5:17 PM EDT. Residents should prepare for potential significant impacts from flooding rain and tornadoes, in addition to gusty winds.
A Flood Watch is in effect for Franklin County, with forecasts indicating 1-3 inches of rain and localized higher amounts. This rainfall presents a significant potential for moderate flooding, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could swell, leading to overspills in vulnerable areas. Low-lying spots, underpasses, and poor drainage areas are particularly susceptible to rapid inundation. Residents in flood-prone areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS also reports a favorable situation for tornadoes, with the potential for several tornadoes, some of which could be intense. These tornadoes could cause considerable damage, power loss, and communication failures. Individuals living in manufactured homes or on boats are advised to relocate to safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be prepared to shelter quickly if a warning is issued.
While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force (10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph), conditions will be gusty. Little to no preparations are needed for wind at this time, but residents should ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change.
This Tropical Storm Watch is effective until October 9, 2026, at 1:30 AM UTC (9:30 PM EDT October 8). For more information on family emergency plans, visit ready.gov/hurricanes. For local weather conditions and forecasts, visit weather.gov/atlanta.
