FORREST COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Forrest County by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, effective today, October 9, 2026, at 10:02 AM CDT. The watch is set to expire at 6:15 PM CDT.
Residents are advised to listen for instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change. While sustained winds are currently expected to remain below tropical storm force, with peak wind forecasts of 15-25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph, conditions may still be gusty. Community officials are currently assessing the extent of any actual wind impacts.
For flooding rain, emergency plans should include the potential for localized flooding from heavy rain. While no additional significant rainfall is forecast, there is a potential for localized rainfall flooding that may prompt a few evacuations. Rivers and tributaries could rise quickly, and small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches may overflow. Flood waters could enter a few structures in vulnerable spots, and rapid ponding of water may occur in underpasses and low-lying areas. Heed any flood watches and warnings issued.
The NWS indicates that tornadoes are not expected at this time, with the situation being unfavorable for their formation. However, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Little to no preparations are needed against tornadoes, but residents should stay informed of the latest forecast.
This alert is issued by NWS Jackson MS.
