A Wind Advisory is in effect for Bell, Harlan, and Letcher Counties from noon today until Sunday morning, with gusts up to 50 mph expected, potentially causing power outages and difficult driving conditions.
A Wind Advisory has been issued for Bell, Harlan, and Letcher Counties, effective from noon today until 5:00 AM EDT Sunday. The National Weather Service in Jackson, KY, reports that southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 to 50 mph, are expected over higher terrain above 1,500 feet and in valleys immediately northwest of the Pine, Black, Cumberland, and Log Mountains.
Residents in communities such as Cumberland, Eolia, Chenoa, Frakes, and Mayking are at greatest risk for the strongest wind gusts. Areas further from these prominent mountains can anticipate southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph, with occasional gusts of 20 to 35 mph.
Gusty winds can blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs and weakly rooted trees in steep terrain could be blown down, potentially leading to power outages. Drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, should use extra caution as strong winds can make driving difficult.
