Portsmouth Water Supply Returns to Normal | Bellamy Reservoir

Portsmouth's water supply has stabilized following the drought that began in June 2025. The Bellamy Reservoir, the city's primary source, has returned to normal capacity, according to the Department of Public Works' first quarter 2026 report released April 28.

The reservoir dropped lower than levels recorded during the 2022 and 2024 droughts but remained above the 2016 and 2020 lows. The DPW has shifted operations to rely more heavily on surface water while groundwater aquifers recharge. During the first three months of 2026, treated water from the Bellamy Reservoir supplied 73 percent of Portsmouth's total water consumption.

Groundwater levels remain below seasonal averages. Cooler temperatures and minimal outdoor irrigation during winter and early spring reduced overall demand on the water system.

The DPW warned that water use restrictions may be necessary if drought conditions persist through late May or early June. The department urged customers to continue conserving water. The report covers both the Portsmouth municipal water system and the Pease Tradeport water system.
