Dense Fog Expected: Drive with Caution in Lowcountry and Coastal Georgia
A Special Weather Statement has been issued for dense fog in southeastern South Carolina and parts of coastal Georgia until 9:45 AM EDT today; drivers should slow down and leave extra space.
Drivers in southeastern South Carolina and portions of Southeast Georgia are advised to slow down and allow extra following distance this morning due to developing fog. The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective immediately until 9:45 AM EDT today, October 1, 2026.
Areas of fog have begun to form and are expected to expand, potentially becoming locally dense. Visibility on roadways could be reduced to as little as 1/4 mile.
The affected areas include the following counties: Jenkins, Screven, Bulloch, and Effingham in Georgia; and Allendale, Hampton, Inland Colleton, Dorchester, Inland Berkeley, Inland Jasper, Beaufort, Coastal Colleton, Charleston, Coastal Jasper, and Tidal Berkeley in South Carolina.
If you are driving within these areas this morning, the NWS recommends slowing down and leaving extra distance ahead of your vehicle. This precaution will provide additional time to react if a sudden stop becomes necessary.
