Mississippi Tourism Hits Record Heights with 44.2 Million Visitors in 2024
Mississippi shattered its tourism record in 2024, welcoming 44.2 million domestic and international visitors who pumped $18.1 billion into the state's economy, Visit Mississippi Director Rochelle Hicks announced Friday at the annual Governor's Conference on Tourism in Vicksburg. The 2024 figures represent a 3.2 percent increase in visitor spending from the previous year, with tourists spending $11.9 billion across the state's attractions, restaurants, and retail establishments.
The economic windfall extended far beyond destination marketing. Tourism's total economic impact sustained 136,094 jobs across Mississippi—translating to one in every 13 jobs in the state—while generating $4.6 billion in labor income for residents. Visitor activity also generated $2.2 billion in government revenues, with state and local taxes alone topping $1.1 billion, funds directed toward education, infrastructure, and public services.
The 2024 milestone caps three consecutive years of record-breaking growth. Mississippi welcomed 43.7 million visitors in 2023, generating $17.5 billion in economic impact. Tourism Economics, the Oxford-based firm that conducted the analysis, attributed the sustained growth to communities' continued investment in tourism assets following earlier pandemic disruptions, positioning Mississippi as an increasingly competitive destination in the broader southern travel market.
Visitor spending concentrated in familiar categories: food and beverage led consumption patterns, followed by lodging, recreation—which saw a notable 5.8 percent increase—and retail. The data reflects a diverse tourism portfolio spanning Mississippi's natural parks, cultural festivals, coastal attractions, and urban destinations that appeal to both leisure and business travelers across the Magnolia State.
