Measles Cases Reach 28-Year High in United States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report Thursday detailing a surge in measles cases across the United States. Health officials confirmed outbreaks in Illinois, New York, Washington, Arizona, California, Wisconsin, Michigan, Hawaii, Arkansas, Washington, D.C., Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The CDC indicated that the current number of cases represents the highest total recorded since 1996. Prior to 1996, measles cases were significantly higher.

Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash that spreads throughout the body.

Health officials urge individuals to ensure they are vaccinated against measles, particularly children. The CDC recommends two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine for optimal protection. The first dose typically occurs between 12 and 15 months of age, and the second dose between 4 and 6 years.
