NCAA Proposal Grants Bowl Eligibility Flexibility to 5-7 Teams Meeting Academic Standards
The NCAA football oversight committee voted to adopt a proposal that allows conferences flexibility in choosing 5-7 teams that have met certain academic standards to fill bowl game opportunities if there aren't enough other deserving teams.
Under the approved measure, conferences can select a team with a 5-7 record to participate in a bowl game, provided that team meets predefined academic benchmarks established by the NCAA. This decision addresses situations where the number of eligible 6-6 or better teams falls short of filling all available bowl slots.
The rule change intends to ensure all bowl games can proceed as planned, maintaining the integrity of the postseason schedule.
