NASA Announces Artemis II Crew to Journey Around the Moon

June 11, 2026

Washington D.C. – NASA has announced the crew for the Artemis II mission, a planned lunar flyby. This mission will be the first crewed voyage to venture beyond Earth’s orbit since the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972.

The Artemis II mission will circumnavigate the moon without landing. The primary objective is to test the Orion spacecraft's life support systems and capabilities in the deep space environment prior to a crewed lunar landing planned for later this decade.

The crew consists of four astronauts:

* **Commander Reid Wiseman:** A veteran NASA astronaut with previous experience on the International Space Station. * **Pilot Victor Glover:** Also a NASA astronaut and a veteran of a long-duration mission on the International Space Station. * **Mission Specialist Christina Koch:** A NASA astronaut holding the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman. * **Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen:** A Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut who will become the first Canadian to travel to the Moon.

According to NASA officials, the mission is a critical step forward in the agency's broader Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon. Data gathered during the Artemis II mission will inform design decisions and operational procedures for future lunar landing missions.

The Artemis II mission is currently scheduled for launch no earlier than November 2024. The exact launch date is subject to change based on continued systems testing and readiness reviews.

"This crew represents the best of humanity and their dedication to exploration and discovery," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson at a press conference. "Artemis II will pave the way for future missions to the lunar surface and beyond."

In preparation for the mission, the astronauts will undergo extensive training at NASA facilities and partner sites. This training will encompass spacecraft systems operations, emergency procedures, and scientific research activities.

The mission is expected to last approximately 10 days, during which time the crew will collect data on radiation levels, spacecraft performance and human physiological responses in deep space. This information will be crucial for ensuring the safety and success of future long-duration missions to the Moon and ultimately, Mars.
