Flock Safety Announces New Oversight Measures for Surveillance Technology

Why it matters locally: Virginia law enforcement agencies, including the Fairfax County Police, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, and Prince William County Police Department, are among those nationally utilizing Flock Safety technology, meaning these new oversight measures will directly affect their operations and data access protocols.

Flock Safety, a company that provides police departments with technology to track vehicle movements, stated on Thursday it would implement several new safeguards for its products. The announcement follows instances of police agencies misusing the company's surveillance systems. The new measures aim to increase accountability and transparency in the use of Flock Safety's camera network. The company's systems record and analyze vehicle data, including license plate information, which law enforcement agencies access for investigative purposes.
