A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Southern Rocky Mountain Front, Southern High Plains, Upper Blackfoot and MacDonald Pass, and Gates of the Mountains. Residents in these areas should prepare for heavy snow and gusty winds from Saturday afternoon, October 9, through Sunday afternoon, October 10.

The National Weather Service in Great Falls, Montana, forecasts total snow accumulations up to 9 inches below 6000 feet and between 8 to 12 inches above 6000 feet. Wind gusts could reach as high as 45 mph. This watch is in effect until 6:00 PM MDT on October 11.

The anticipated conditions could make travel very difficult, particularly over mountain passes. Backcountry conditions are expected to be very dangerous. The combination of wet snow and gusty winds may lead to downed tree limbs and power lines.

A snow band may develop across parts of Central Montana, potentially causing localized higher snowfall rates and amounts. Residents are advised to monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this developing situation from the National Weather Service.
