Patricia Johnson, Longtime Proctor Resident, Passes Away at 93
Proctor resident Patricia Anne (Shappy) Johnson, 93, a longtime community member known for her work at the Proctor Library and involvement with the Bone Builders group, passed away on September 10, 2026.

Proctor resident Patricia Anne (Shappy) Johnson, 93, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after a brief illness. Johnson was a familiar face in the community, known for her dedication to family, her work at the Proctor Library, and her long-standing involvement with the Bone Builders group.
Born on December 28, 1932, in Rutland, Patricia was the daughter of William A. and Mary (Robie) Shappy. She was the eighth of nine children in a large, close-knit family. Johnson graduated from Rutland High School in 1950 and began her career as a switchboard operator for New England Telephone Co., where she formed many lifelong friendships.
Patricia married Herbert (Hoby) Johnson on October 8, 1955. After the birth of their first child, she became a devoted stay-at-home mother and homemaker in Proctor. She enthusiastically supported her children's sports activities and interests. Once her children were older, she enjoyed working for the Proctor Library for several years, contributing to the local institution. Johnson was also a proud member of St. Dominic Church and participated in the Bone Builders group of Proctor for 25 years.
Her family shared that her happiest times were spent with loved ones, leaving them with cherished memories. Patricia is survived by her three children: daughter Debra (Joe) Dauphinais of Rutland, son Herbert (Lisa) Johnson of Proctor, and daughter Kristen Johnson of Proctor. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Brandon, Bethany, and Kristina; a sister-in-law, Helen Newton; many nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Sheila Racette.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoby Johnson, and her eight siblings: Vincent Shappy, Elaine Clark, Ethel Scott, Winnie Rejeski, William Shappy Jr., Clayton Shappy, Irving Shappy, and Russell Shappy. She was also predeceased by nephews Kim Scott and Bill Shappy, and nieces Donna Shappy, Sandy Shappy, and Jill Van Buren.
Calling hours were held at Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland on Wednesday, September 16, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A funeral mass took place yesterday, Thursday, September 17, at Christ the King Church at 11:00 AM. Burial followed at South Street Cemetery in Proctor.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bayada Hospice or to the Proctor Free Library. Johnson's family extended a special thank you to Bayada Hospice nurses for their compassionate care and support during her final days.
