Dr. Erica Schwartz Confirmed as CDC Director

Why it matters locally: The confirmation of a new CDC director provides leadership to the national public health agency, which is crucial for coordinating responses to health crises that could impact Utah's public health infrastructure and residents.

WASHINGTON – The Senate confirmed Dr. Erica Schwartz as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday. Her confirmation establishes new leadership for the public health agency. Dr. Schwartz appeared before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in July for her confirmation hearing. The CDC has experienced a reduction in its workforce, including layoffs and resignations. These personnel changes have occurred alongside leadership transitions within the organization.
