Ohioans looking to plant native trees can now easily purchase seedlings grown at the Buckeye State Tree Nursery thanks to a new online ordering system launched by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry. The system, available at nursery.ohiodnr.gov, aims to expand access to locally grown trees for conservation efforts and private landowners.

The website allows customers to browse available tree species, such as buckeye, pawpaw, and American chestnut, and place orders directly online. Customers have the option to pick up their seedling orders at the nursery in Zanesville or have them shipped directly to their property. This initiative supports the division's goal of making more Ohio-grown trees accessible for planting projects across the state.

“The Buckeye State Tree Nursery was created to make more Ohio-grown trees available for conservation tree planting projects, and this new website makes it much easier for landowners and organizations to be part of that effort,” said Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser. “Whether someone is restoring a woodland, creating wildlife habitat, establishing a windbreak, or simply adding trees to their property, they can now easily purchase seedlings grown right here in Ohio.”

The Buckeye State Tree Nursery has already planted more than 750,000 seedlings representing over 30 native tree and shrub species during its first two growing seasons. These seedlings are used for a variety of conservation projects, including reforestation, wildlife habitat creation, windbreaks, restoration of abandoned mine lands, and supporting state forests and nature preserves.

Growing seedlings from seeds collected within Ohio ensures that the trees are well-suited to the state's climate and growing conditions. The minimum purchase requirement for the online system is 10 seedlings, and available species and quantities will fluctuate throughout the year.

The ODNR Division of Forestry promotes the wise use and sustainable management of Ohio’s public and private woodlands. More information about Ohio’s woodlands can be found on the division's website.
