Cyclospora Outbreak Linked to Taco Bell Lettuce in Five States

Health authorities have identified shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants in five states as the source of a Cyclospora outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 1,644 individuals have fallen ill.

The CDC advises consumers in these states to avoid consuming shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell. Investigators linked the outbreak to specific restaurant locations in the affected regions.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the parasite *Cyclospora cayetanensis*. Individuals typically contract the parasite by consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms often include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue.

Public health officials initiated an investigation following an increase in reported cyclosporiasis cases. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of *Cyclospora* in samples from affected individuals. Investigators then traced potential food sources, leading to the identification of the shredded lettuce.

Taco Bell representatives confirmed their cooperation with public health officials during the investigation. They have reportedly removed the implicated product from their restaurants in the affected states. Authorities continue to monitor the situation for new cases.
